How chiropractic treatment helps sciatica has been a subject of discussion for quite a long time. Sciatica pain is caused by different factors, thus there are different ways of how sciatica can be treated.
Chiropractic treatment will be recommended by some people but considered unacceptable by others. To tell the truth, as with anything else in the world the common sense is somewhere in between.
In fact, chiropractics help with only some cases of sciatica, and for sure not then it flares up or is chronic.
Using physical therapy together with manipulations by chiropractors usually helps with spinal adjustments and with sciatica pain relief which will bring you strength and mobility. A good chiropractor will also offer you an advice on a set of exercises you may try doing when at home which will also save you from recurring of back pain state. You will find out that there will be special exercises directed at stretching and strengthening of muscles especially the ones that help to hold the spine.
After the spinal manipulations done by chiropractors you feel the relief this is a good time to start massage therapy as it is meant to help loosening tight muscles and help stretching them. Massage therapy is additionally used to prepare tense muscles for spinal adjustments.
Yet, what you may not find while reading about sciatica is the risk issue. Chiropractic is not allowed as a treatment for all sciatica causes, what is more, for some of them it is considered unsafe. For instance, rotational adjustments done with the neck may cause strokes in people with poor hearts. There are instances when chiropractic treatment instead of helping with the spine caused the spinal discs to herniate. Additionally, frequent chiropractic treatments are not recommended as they cause hypermobility of discs, tearing of tissues and even scarring of ligaments. Any of these are a threat to your physical health and usually lead to worsened sciatica condition.
Remember, chiropractics is not a solution but an additional way to help reduce or lessen the pain you are going through. There are risks as with any kind of treatment. In any case, when you think over the treatments and try to make your choice, it is always a good idea to talk to specialist first. Never underestimate the knowledge of fully trained doctor. Yet, if your doctor offers you chiropractics as an aid to your treatment there is no reason why you should not do it. And finally, always keep in mind that almost everything that happens to you is the result of your own activity and life style. Therefore, perhaps changing something about yourself and about your attitude to what you do is all you need to escape sciatica?

You need to take care of how you keep your posture if you want to succeed. You should also try to avoid lifting heavy objects. Set your own home rules and limitations. You should not exceed the limits of your potential. You should also start sleeping on a firm bed using special sciatica pillows. Try sleeping on your back as it will help you to keep your back straight. As you can see these are quite small things but their help in fighting sciatica cannot be underestimated. However, you need to make a plan of how you consume vegetables. The best idea is to consult the doctor or dietician. If you don’t want to see any of those, do at least some research as to sciatica diets. In addition, you should not take medications all the time, try natural remedies. Drinking green and herbal teas help quite a lot to make sciatica pain less obvious.

Use Self Help For Sciatic Nerve Pain

When it comes to treating sciatic nerve pain (sciatica) and whether you should use heat or ice to ease pain you should use this simple rule of thumb, base your decision on whether or not to use ice or heat on the symptoms. There are many people that have the misconception that heat is always used to ease the pain, this is not always true.

~Just as with a sprain, ice is what should be used if you are experiencing a sharp or intense pain. It does not matter if swelling is present or not because the sharp pain is an indication that the sciatic nerve is inflamed and you always treat inflammation with cold not heat.

~On the other hand if you are only experiencing a mild soreness or perhaps a little stiffness then heat would be the way to go. Soreness and stiffness is an indicator that there is no significant amount of swelling.

Heat deadens the nerve receptors which is why heat almost always feels good however, when the sciatic nerve suffers injury or trauma, it swells and becomes inflamed. This is the sharp severe or intense pain you feel so, when you first experience the pain avoid heat for a minimum of 48 hours. This is to ensure that swelling and inflammation do not develop, if it does and you apply heat you will only worsen the inflammation and feel even more pain when you remove the heat.

After many years of trying to ease the sciatic nerve pain with heat and only feel more intense pain once I removed the heat, I decided to try ice. This is when Discovered the above to be true, ice really does work when you first experience sciatica, it doesn’t feel comfortable when applied but does ease the pain considerably.

Doctors will tell you that with any injury where swelling and inflammation are present, applying ice packs will help to reduce the swelling and inflammation. This is because ice is one of the best anti-inflammatory measures, even though uncomfortable as it may be, that you can take. For long term relief you will have to deal with the short term discomfort but, I think you will see it is worth it.

If you have applied a topical analgesic such as, Icy Hot, Ben Gay, Theragesic, Biofreeze, or any other, do not apply ice or heat until the effects have completely worn off or you can suffer from skin damage or irritation. When you do use ice packs, or heat for that matter, be sure to place a cloth between the ice or heat and your skin this is also to help prevent skin damage.

When applying heat or ice you should only apply it for twenty minuets once every two hours, once an hour if pain is severe but, to help avoid skin damage try to do it every two. hours. It will take time to feel the heat or cold through a cloth so, wait until you actually feel the heat or cold before you start timing.

Make sure to consult a physician before applying ice or heat if you suffer from reduced blood circulation due to diabetes, nerve damage, or anything that reduces blood flow.

After many years of suffering from sciatic nerve pain I finally found some information that help me to relieve my sciatica and also helped with long term preventive measures to keep it from recurring. Click Here for more information on how I did it.

Back Pain is Severe on Right Side – What is Causing It?

March 9, 2010 by Tony Maichl · 1 Comment

Severe lower back pain on the side of the back that radiates downward through the buttock and down the back of the leg, is normally caused by a problem with sciatic nerve. The sciatic nerve is the longest nerve in the body it begins in the lower back and runs downward all the way to the toes.

Severe lower back pain is referred to as sciatica because it is generally caused by pressure being placed on the sciatic nerve. If the pressure is excessive enough, the pain can be so severe it can become debilitating. The pain can be on either side of the back and can also be centered in the low back, and is common for the pain to continue down the back of the legs.

Sciatica, is the term used to describe lower back pain due to problems with the sciatic nerve, and the most common problems with the nerve are, Piriformis muscle damage, and damaged discs in the lower part of the spinal column. The Piriformis muscle is the muscle that attaches the thigh bone to the lower back, the sciatic nerve is located under this muscle as it runs from the lower back to the feet, when the muscle becomes inflamed and swells, it places pressure on the nerve, this is what is causing the pain.

It is common to try different position when standing, sitting, or lying down to ease the pain, however, if you have ever suffered from sciatica, you know that no matter what position you try, you cannot completely eliminate the pain. Many also believe that lying on a heating pad will ease the pain, and the are correct, because the heat deadens the nerve pain receptors thus stopping them from sending signals to the brain. What most are unaware of is that after removing the heat the pain is worse, because the heat worsens inflammation, which is what causes swelling, more swelling, more pressure, more pain.

If a problem with the discs in the lower back is causing the sciatica then, sitting will only make the problem worse as this place’s pressure on the sciatic nerve, because sitting compresses the spine. Instead of sitting, take short walks to help keep the spine from compressing. It does not matter if the pain is due to Piriformis muscle damage or damage to discs in the lower back, the pain can be severe and debilitating as either condition causes inflammation of the sciatic nerve. Inflammation in turn causes swelling, the more swelling there is the worse the pain is.

There are things you can do to get relief from lower back pain that you can do at home that will not only rid you of sciatca but, will also keep it from returning. Playing sports comes with inherent risk. It isn’t just ourselves that we’re competing against and more than likely, we’re playing on teams against others. The rush of movement, as well as stops and starts that happen in a game can strain our bodies. Not to mention the increased risk of having to account for the movement of others.

The can all result in injuries that can range from cuts and bruises, to sprains and tears, and even escalate to more dangerous back related injuries that may require surgery in the future. Fortunately, sports medicine is a dynamic field that provides athletes with a multi-faceted approach to injury recovery.

Chiropractors are part of the sports medicine philosophy. Unlike most medical professions, these practitioners are experts in the way that the body moves in relation to the spinal cord. This knowledge allows them to approach injuries from a different mindset.

Rather than treating an injury with pain medication, chiropractors are able to deduce what caused a particular pain and go after the source which in many cases involves the spine. Any body blow will move through the entire body to include the spinal column.

Their experience in spinal manipulation to effect the body and help alleviate pain will help athletes recover from injury without having to receive surgical intervention. Beyond spine specific attention, there is more in the chiropractors arsenal when it comes to making sure you recover.

The knots that cause us pain in your muscles also do a disservice to the overall quality of the muscle itself. Knots shorten the overall length of a muscle which can in turn restrict it’s movement. Decreased movement equals increase chance of injury.

Getting involved in sports or any type of exercise gets the blood pumping and allows us the freedom of physical movement. Most of our lives involve staid office jobs that don’t require much if any physical involvement and so to keep our bodies and minds healthy we play sports. This activity, however, can lead to injury ranging from the simple like a torn muscle to the more complex, like a back injury.

Chiropractors can help in the treatment of any sports related injuries and can even help prevent the need for further medical intervention. In fact, it was the 1980 Los Angeles Olympics that first recognized chiropractors as an integral part of the sports medicine team.

When injured during sports, the blow almost always affects the spinal column and can cause a misalignment. Getting hit in the legs, feet, shoulder, ribs, and even head causes a chain reaction that reaches the spinal column.

Blows that reach the spine can create misalignments. These can create back pain that becomes chronic and may eventually require surgical intervention.

The body moves as a unit and all the parts contribute to the whole. Chiropractors know this and thus approach the problem from an overall viewpoint as opposed to zeroing in on the pain and treating only that. It’s knowing what is causing the pain that provides a more beneficial outcome to sports injury relief.

Athletes of all levels have come to realize the benefits of chiropractors as part of the sports medicine team and in fact, Evander Holyfield has come out and said that he prefers to get his spine adjusted before getting into the boxing ring.

It is difficult to go from an office job that creates spinal compression and follow that up with intense athletic activity and not become injured. Approaching the body as the biomechanical wonder that it is with the help of the Clear Lake chiropractor can give sport injury relief that may not require surgery in the future.
