Low Back Surgery – Money For the Surgeon Or Help For the Patient?
Lower back disc surgeries are expensive! As a claims adjuster several years ago I paid for hundreds of surgeries done by well-meaning surgeons who charged $10,000-$12,000 per surgery. I had one surgeon who would actually perform 2 surgeries per day. While I was in charge of paying disability benefits, medical claims, and permanent disability, the vast majority of the money went to medical doctors and surgeons. Often, a lower back disc surgery claim would cost at least $60,000.
In order to perform 2 surgeries per day, office staff including nurse practitioners and physician assistants are the ones who see the patients before and after surgery. This kind of impersonal service is what is required to make $20,000 per day. At that rate, is the focus on the patient or finances of the office and surgeon?
While most surgeons and doctors in general have their hearts in the right place, it is difficult to stay focused when you are seeing patients. Similar symptoms appear to be duplicate patients and individual attention is not given including possible side effects and alternatives to surgery.
At least 50% of all the cases I paid for as an adjuster ended badly. Most did not recover even to the point where they were before the surgery and only a small majority were improved. Most ended in failure. When I quit my job and went to chiropractic school, my goal was help people to avoid the destructive effects of surgery.
A neurosurgeon once told me when I was an adjuster, that there is no such thing as a one-time surgery. All backs that undergo surgery will need further and additional surgery in the future as the operated zone of the spine becomes weakened and other areas around it are damaged over time. Thus, by doing one surgery, the surgeon is ensuring his future surgeries as most people go to the same surgeon again since the surgeon “knows my back.”
Herniated discs pinch on the sensitive nervous system tissue and nerves which exist the spine. Chiropractic and physical therapy modalities can help to allow the body to heal this problem on its own. Surgery is not the only answer when a disc has herniated. Chiropractic relieves the pressure on the nerves and allows the person to return to normal activities. I have seen over the last 10 year plus, hundreds of people saved from the devastating effects of lumbar disc surgery.
When considering therapy for a low back injury or herniation, we should consider therapies which have little to no chance of making things worse. I recommend starting with chiropractic which is gentle and effective. While no therapy is 100% effective in every case starting with what we know works and is cost effective respects the patient’s rights.
However, often the money involved in high dollar medical cases can cloud the judgment of the doctor and the patient.

Ways To Relieve Neck Pain
The pain and stiffness in the neck are usually caused by excessive stretching or spasm of the muscles of your neck. They can also be caused by inflammation or swelling of the joints in your neck. The neck pain is sometimes caused by arthritis or by injury to the discs of your neck vertebrae or cervical disks.
Sleeping with a pillow that doesn’t suit your head and is not symmetrical can be a reason for the stiffness in your neck. If you stay in the posture resting your forehead on your arm or hand for a considerable length of time, then that too can lead to pain and stiffness in your neck muscles. However, a correction in your posture and the knowledge of your body movements can take care of the conditions triggering the neck pain and stiffness.
If a nerve in the head or neck area suffers damage, then it can impact the conduction of the nerve impulses to the areas of the body it supplies and this can be a reason for the pain in the neck and tissues supplied by the affected nerve. Over exercising can also strain and cause pain to the neck muscles.
There are several ways to relieve neck pain and stiffness. One of the best natural ways to prevent neck pain is to adopt a good body posture. If the pain is worse at the end of the day, analyze what you did during the day. When you work on a computer, the top of your screen should be at eye level and you should take short breaks periodically to avoid sitting in the same position for a long time as it adversely affects the blood circulation.
A regime of exercising the muscles around your neck can make them tough and powerful. Keeping the nose along the central line of your body also helps maintain symmetry in body position. During sleeping, you head should be straight and not twisted at an angle. If the stiffness recurs when you wake up, then changing your mattress might help relieve your pain.
The ways listed above usually relieve a stiff neck or pain in the neck, but if for some reason they don’t help you , then you should go through a medical checkup. If you feel any pain in your arm or hands or any numbing sensation in your fingers with the neck pain, then it might be due to a pinched nerve and you should consult a doctor about your problem.

Belleville Herniated Disc Patients Are Trying Out New Therapy Called Spinal Decompression
Belleville Herniated Disc patients in Illinois are able to find some relief from their back problems, and live without pain. The new non-surgical care called spinal decompression therapy is providing an alternative treatment for many who experience back pain on a regular basis. Local patients of Dr. James White are learning how to help their back problems at his chiropractic clinic. If you live in Illinois, it may be good news. If you don’t, you might consider visiting a clinic near you that specializes in this new treatment.
The flexible gel pads that fit between the bones of your spine to protect them are called discs. Your discs keep your bones from grinding together when you exercise. When you walk, run, or jump, or even sit, the bones have the potential to bump. The discs prevent this from happening.
As you age, or if you injure a disc, these gel filled pads can start to leak, or even bulge into your nerves. This becomes very painful for some people, and can also cause numb spots in your arms and legs. The pain can range from mild to severe.
Often, herniated discs are treated with traditional surgery. The process involves removing the disc and fusing the surrounding bones together, in some cases. But, for patients whose surgery did not provide pain relief, or for patients who prefer to try alternative pain relief methods, the spinal decompression process is very attractive.
This new spinal therapy is provided at chiropractic clinics. The process is a slow and gentle stretching of the disc area between the vertebrae. With new technology, the chiropractic specialist is able to realign the spine and gradually remove the pressure from the problem disc area. When the pressure is relieved, the disc is more able to heal naturally.
With a ninety percent effective rate, the therapy is a hopeful new alternative to surgery. Patients using this therapy should expect to take about four to six weeks of therapy to help heal their herniated disc. Appointments can take about twenty to forty minutes depending upon the patient. The gentle stretching of the painful disc area focuses on allowing the disc to heal over time. Each patient is different, so each healing process will be different, as will the end results. But, for many, it is worth the effort.

Missoula Chiropractor: Your Health-The Road to Wellness. Article #2 Feet
Dr. Shaun Stuto, a chiropractor, founded the Transformation Chiropractic Missoula MT wellness center, a health firm based in Missoula, MT. Dr. Stuto works with the citizens of Missoula county to get to the root cause of any symptoms and help families achieve and maintain lifelong wellness. Symptoms such as neck and back pain could be due to underlying causes elsewhere in the body such as improper posture. But do you know that most of these problems can come from improper foot health?
The foot is a great masterpiece from nature. Aside from enabling you to walk upright, it also supports your weight and plays a role in your balance and posture. The foot has a specialized design, with 26 bones and 33 joints. Though compact is size, it is a very complex system, and aside from bones, they also have a network of tendons, muscles and blood vessels.
With the foot being the primary weight bearing element in our body, it is subject to a constant bombardment of pressure and transient forces. Even with light walking, the foot absorbs shock every time it comes into contact with the ground. With its numerous muscles, the foot should absorb and disperse the impact to minimize shock to the rest of the bones in the body. As foot dysfunction worsens, the muscles no longer function optimally. The shocks we get from normal walking are dispersed throughout our entire body.
The commmon recipients of these shocks are your ankles, and knees. But it doesn’t stop there. They can also rise up to your pelvis, back, neck and beyond. Since the body functions as a kinematic chain where everything affects each other, foot problems could be the cause of your headaches and even TMJ problems.
Foot problems often contribute to back pain, especially the lumbar spine. A common foot problem that causes this is flat feet. With flat feet, your foot absorbs abnormal pressure where it was simply not designed. And if you walk continuously in that situation, the pain taken from your foot may make it to your spine and cause misalignments or “subluxations”, hence the pain. On the other hand, having a high-arched and rigid foot can also cause problems in your back and neck. This is due to the foot not having enough cushion to counter the transient or “normal” forces of walking and running.
With this newly acquired knowledge, caring for your feet should be a high priority. Part of that care is visiting your chiropractor and having your feet checked. Problems in the feet are not necessarily painful. Subluxations are much like cavities, by the time they hurt, the damage has already been done.
You should take the proactive action of seeing your chiropractor to ensure undetected and asymptomatic foot subluxations are not present. Transformation Chiropractic from Missoula MT can help you with getting to the root cause of problems like back pain, neck pain, foot problems, and headaches. More importantly, they will help you move beyond your aches and pains into a newer realm of thriving health and wellness. They utilize techniques like Applied Kinesiology and Neuro-Emotional Technique to customize a treatment plan specific to the patient instead of fitting a patient into their treatment plan.
True health is much more than a lack of symptoms; rather, it is a decision. Transformation Chiropractic of Missoula MT believes you want and deserve the finer things in life. This includes bounding energy and vibrant health. They can help you transform your body and mind and achieve outstanding health.

Car Crash, Whiplash, Then Chiropractic?
Some of the most common questions that can arise after a serious automobile accident are people asking themselves if they are going to need chiropractic care. Is it even necessary? How important is chiropractic care after an automobile collision? Should you be worried that you might need to see a chiropractor?
The truth is that after any serious injury chiropractic care can be extremely important-and often necessary. If for any reason the vertebra moves or is forced out of its normal alignment, it can cause pressure in the neck, back and associated nerves, resulting in severe and sometimes immediate pain after the accident. However, sometimes severe pain does not set in until a few days after the accident.
Anyone who is experiencing any severe pain or certain types of symptoms after an auto accident may want to consider seeing a doctor of chiropractic, as these types of pain almost always indicate a misalignment of the spine. These symptoms typically include a severe headache that isn’t resolved with the use of pain medication, back and neck aches or stiffness, and aching or stiff joints. In this instance, it is most likely that spinal misalignment that is the primary issue. Chiropractic treatment is a very good idea in these instances. The chiropractor will not only adjust the misalignment, but he or she can also help in determining the severity of any potential soft tissue injury.
In some cases where injuries go undetected or untreated for many months or years, too much time may pass to detect the root or the cause of the pain. That is where the importance of immediate chiropractic care comes into play. A chiropractor can start to diagnose potential problems immediately after the accident, which may otherwise go unnoticed. Respectively, chiropractic care can also be very useful to provide relief from previous or older spinal, nerve, neck and back problems or injuries. Chiropractic care can gently and safely provide relief from a wide variety of back and other pains due to an accident without the need for any surgery or medication.
Generally, after one has experienced an auto accident or other serious accident or injury, he or she tends to focus on the obvious injuries that can be seen rather than the ones that require deeper examination. After any type of injury, the body’s own natural healing process will start producing scar tissue. However, this scar tissue will always remain more sensitive than uninjured tissue. Receiving proper and immediate chiropractic treatment following a severe injury ensures that the spine is in its best position before the scar tissue formation can start, meaning that if the spine is properly aligned before all of this happens, the chances are very slim that the patient will face any further problems following the chiropractic treatment.
In essence, visiting a chiropractic doctor after a car collision or other serious accident is a wise decision. The faster one goes to a chiropractor for treatment, the better the end results will be.

Is Chiropractic Care Safe?
The safety of chiropractic care is unquestionably one of the most frequently asked questions of patients suffering from back and neck pain. Before a patient decides to try out this therapy, they’d like to assure themselves that the treatment is safe and has no side effects. So, is chiropractic safe? The short answer to that question is ‘yes’.
When you’ve been suffering from low back or neck pain, your first thought may be to dull the pain through pain killers in order to bring your condition to a manageable level. You may even have considered surgery to alleviate the pain. However, chiropractic is a safe, non-surgical treatment that concentrates on re-aligning your spine to dissipate your pain. This is done through several sessions with a doctor who specializes in massaging your spine to correct the alignment and alleviate your pain.
You won’t be prescribed any doses of medications or undergo extensive surgery needing careful post operative care. In fact, there is absolutely no invasive surgery involving your spine or back whatsoever. The spinal cord is a delicate region in your body which must be attended to with precise care and skill. A chiropractic doctor works externally on your vertebrae to bring your discs in proper alignment and reduce the pressure on your central nervous system caused by slipped or misaligned spinal discs.
Chiropractic also involves the external manual therapy of your muscles, joints and tendons to heal injuries to the muscles and bring relief from incessant pain. The treatment must be done be a qualified practitioner with verifiable credentials. As your spine is very sensitive to mistreatment, only an experienced chiropractic practitioner should manipulate your vertebrae.
If you’re elderly and suffering from osteoporosis, you may want to speak to your physician before considering this option. Similarly, very young patients may also require prior consultation with a physician who may be able to advise whether chiropractic therapy would be conducive. You should always reveal your personal medical history to your chiropractic doctor to enable your doctor to perform a thorough diagnosis of your condition and devise a suitable course of treatment.
You may experience some mild discomfort or soreness when you’re undergoing chiropractic treatment for the first time. This is common as your body adjusts to the alignment of your vertebrae, kind of like when you work out. You may undergo posture stabilization as part of your therapy in which case you’ll feel slightly uncomfortable at first as you start to stabilize your posture. None of these initial side effects will last and you will not suffer any permanent damage to your body when you are treated by a skilled and experienced practitioner.
By using natural methods of treatment, chiropractic has gained a good reputation for being a safe alternative treatment to conventional medicine and surgery. The proponents of this type of therapy advocate its efficacy by stressing that all treatment methods are externally conducted. Only spine, joints and muscles are manipulated to achieve the desired results.
When you choose chiropractic care as your preferred solution to alleviate pain in your back and neck, you’re opting for a safe, alternative therapy that doesn’t involve spinal surgery. Through the gentle manipulation of your spine, you’ll quickly experience relief from your pain and begin to enjoy a pain free life again.
