Different Ways to Treat Tendon Strain and Associated Pain

Tendon strain is a common injury that can occur from misuse, most often from a sports injury. For instance, the Achilles tendon that connects the anklebone to the calf muscles are most often injured by basketball players.

Generally, this injury is treatable by resting the area and occasional applications of ice pack. To help prevent swelling and relieve pain this area is generally wrapped securely, but not overly tight. You can also relieve pain and swelling by elevating the area while resting.

If you are not careful, overstretching the tendon with repetitive action, while putting excessive on the area can cause damage to the tendons and cause pain and swelling. For instance, a weightlifter may cause his or her injuries by neglecting the warning signs of pain, since the body sends painful warning when it is overworked and stressed and in need of rest and recuperation time. You can condition the body for tendon strain beforehand by doing stretching and strengthening exercises as do professional dancers.

Tendon strain or injury is easy to diagnose while looking at the loss of motion as well as pain someone may feel. However, further testing may be required by the use of such tests as an ultrasound, MRI and even x-rays. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs or NSAIDs are generally prescribed for the condition.

Through care is vital after healing from surgery, therefore your surgeon may recommend the use of daily stretching and strengthening exercises. Exercising in warm water may help to prevent re-injuring the area. Visiting a physical therapist to learn the proper exercise techniques is ideal. However, therapy may include more that exercises, depending on the cause of the injury. Stretching, running and gait re-education as well as soft tissue massages and ultrasound therapy may be recommendable. Different types of splints may be useful as are, numbing medication or cortisone injections.

Physical therapy may comprise of strengthening exercises, ultrasound therapy, soft-tissue massage/mobilization, and stretching and also gait or running re-education. If the tendon strain was done to the Achilles tendon, the surgeon or doctor treating the patient may order appropriate shoes that properly fit your personal foot type. Also, the appropriate shoes may have to actually fit the particular activity. For example, running shoes are different from those used to play basketball. Having the appropriate shoe will prevent recurrence of the condition sometimes. Tendon strain accounts for as high as 50% of sports injuries, thus it may be very important to prevent them from happening.

Tennis elbow or golfer’s elbow are excellent examples of sports related injuries that are often created by misuse of the sport’s instrument. Tendon strain is quite common in these sports as well, and the treatment is the same as found above in those instances.

Chiropractic Spinal Adjustments Can Help

Some chiropractors and health researchers have conducted studies over the past several years looking into how specific chiropractic techniques can help to alleviate common ailments such as high blood pressure. The University of Chicago conducted promising research that did in fact see a drop in the blood pressure of individuals who received what is called an ‘atlas adjustment’ versus patients who received a placebo treatment.

Aside from spinal adjustments, the chiropractor has different ways to relieve sciatica pain and help you regain mobility and strength, as some chiropractors use physical therapy alongside the manipulations. A chiropractor will also be able to teach you about exercise, proper body mechanics and ergonomics to prevent back pain from recurring. Among the exercises there will most likely be stretching and strengthening exercises to relieve and retrain the various muscle groups that hold up the spine.

A Chiropractor will work with a patient’s entire body but they focus primarily on the patient’s spine. This is because Chiropractors believe that the majority of a body’s illnesses and injuries can be treated via treating the spine. During your initial Chiropractic exam, your Chiropractor will take your full medical history. After the history has been taken, you will be given a full and thorough physical exam with special attention focused upon your joints and your spine. Your Chiropractor will also take some x-rays and do a few extra tests to define your illness’s diagnosis.

When people think of chiropractors, bone cracking and spinal adjustment are usually the only things that come to mind. While back problems are probably one of the most common ailments addressed by a chiropractic doctor, they are capable of many other treatments and therapies for a variety of physical problems. There are many chiropractors who also specialize in specific treatment areas, such as sports injury. In fact, chiropractic treatment is great alternative to resorting to medication.

Stress and repetitive motion need to be addressed when dealing with chronic muscle pain. If a muscle is hurting for an extended period of time, then therapy may be necessary. It is also a good idea to get to the cause of the stress or try to reduce the amount of movement in a repetitive motion. After a muscle is injured from a trauma, such as lifting a heavy object that causes lower back pain, it is imperative to start the healing process with some sort of therapy. Chiropractic care is a great therapy to help muscle and joint pain.

Not many people are aware that detoxification chiropractors exist and that their services can be utilized to provide health benefits. Since it is an alternative therapy, it may not provide instant relief. In case the patient is in a serious condition, it is advisable to turn to the allopathic method of medical treatment to provide immediate relief. The services of a detoxification chiropractor may be used to make lifestyle changes like taking a healthy diet and thus improve the quality of life. However, it is best to consult your doctor before taking up chiropractic care for the detoxification of your body, and communicate with him regularly regarding the progress in the treatment.

Here Come the Holidays

The holidays are here – Chanukah, Christmas, and Kwanzaa. Lots of family get-togethers, lots of fellowship and fun, and usually lots of food. Family dinners, parties, family breakfasts, more parties. Is there any way to avoid gaining five or ten unwanted pounds during the extended holiday season? Thanksgiving through early January can be a pretty long time. In order to maintain that healthy weight range you have worked hard to achieve, it’s important to keep following the good habits that got you there.

We want to have fun and enjoy ourselves during the holidays. We want to participate in all the activities and share the abundance of good food with family and friends. The questions is: How to let go without letting go? The solutions are available by having built a solid foundation. Food plans that work are based on a few simple and solid principles -

Eat five or six small meals daily.

Make sure each meal combines protein and complex carbohydrates 1,2 Drink plenty of water Exercise regularly Have a “free food day” once a week Such a food plan is realistic and doable. There’s no crazy dieting involved, no highs or lows. You are eating healthy food with no restrictions, choosing from all basic food groups. You eat anything you want, being sure to follow guidelines on portion sizes. The results are weight loss that stays lost. Because you’re exercising regularly, your body sheds fat pounds and adds a few pounds of lean muscle mass. Your metabolism becomes optimized to burn fat, even when you’re resting. If you’ve been following such a food plan your metabolism is already doing what it is designed to do. During the holidays you’ll continue to burn fat for energy, provided you don’t overload your system with too many extra calories.

Try to schedule your free day – when you can eat anything you want, as much as you want, and whenever you want – to coincide with a big holiday get-together. When you’re at a party and it is your free food day, you can indulge as much as you like. It’s a part of your regular food plan. That’s a pretty good bonus! Also, alcohol consumption often goes up during the holiday season. Punch, egg nog, all sorts of “holiday cheer”. These beverages are super-high in calories. 3 Again, your free day is a good day to indulge yourself. On other days, maybe not so much.

After the last guest has gone home and the last dish is put back in the cupboard, if we have gained a few pounds during the course of the holidays it’s not so bad. What we wanted to avoid was gaining a bunch of weight. Now, we can return to our regular food plan – six days on and one day off – and those extra few pounds will be gone in four to six weeks. We had fun, we spent quality time with a lot of family and friends, and at the same time we took care of our health and well-being. That helps make the holidays especially joyous!

Some people are always asking how Pittsburgh Chiropractic Care Helps Relieve Back Pain Naturally. I think, just like any other chiropractor they are trained and highly qualified to do the work they do. They go through many tests and have to pass every one of them with flying colors, just like a regular doctor.

Pittsburgh chiropractic has wonderful chiropractors because they do a large amount of studies on your bones and joints and this allows them to understand when you have a problem and they can fix it. Chiropractors are skilled because they know how to move your bones to the right places to get them to heal.

The two appointments that I did have at the chiropractor made me feel absolutely wonderful. I was able to walk better and get up better. I can only imagine how horrible it must be for someone who is dealing with their back pain and has been dealing with it for years.

I know that when people get older they deal with a lot of pain and I can not imagine how bad it must be for them when they are not able to get any help from anyone. This is why if you have a loved one that has back, neck or shoulder pain then you should really help them to get to a chiropractor.

More than half of the people that have gone to chiropractors in Pittsburgh have had wonderful success stories to tell about the chiropractors that are there. They have said that the people (including staff) at the Pittsburgh chiropractic clinics have treated them wonderful and the doctors were even better.

The amount of time depends on the fact that once your bones have been in a certain places for so long this could result in them having to slowly move your bones through out several appointments. Always make sure that you get a consultation with the chiropractor so that you can do some of your own assessing.

If you find that you are suffering from back pain, you may want to find a Pittsburgh Chiropractic professional that will be able to help you with your problem – you can learn more at http://www.alleghenymedical.com/

My back hurt horribly. I was always in pain and my mobility was very limited due to the pain and being afraid of what may happen if I strained it even a little. The doctor couldn’t seem to help and I feared I would need surgery. Then I found Cornelius Chiropractic care and now I am living pain free.

Their friendly staff started off by helping her relax and feel more comfortable with her treatment. They made her feel like family and they were right there with her every step of the way. Each step was explained in detail so there was never any worry.

Most people really don’t understand how much of your body can be effected by problems in their backs. It can affect mobility and pain may be in other areas because of vertebrae being out of line. Cornelius Chiropractic care relives back and body pain by naturally realigning vertebrae in the back and neck.

By making sure the vertebrae are in proper alignment it helps to alleviate pressure on the nerves which can cause tremendous pain in the back as well as other parts of the body. This is done with out any type of surgery and is painless.

Relaxing the muscles in her back helped as well. They also told us that relaxing the muscles may help to prevent future injury. They said that when the muscles in the back are relaxed then there is less chance or pulling them during normal activities that involve those muscles.

The entire process was so simple I couldn’t believe the doctors couldn’t have done this themselves. She felt better after only one visit and was completely pain free by the time her treatment was done.

If you seems to be suffering from back pain, you will find that you are also finding it hard to sleep at night, you may want to speak to Cornelius Chiropractic for a solution at http://www.lakenormanspine.com

Calcific Tendinitis: What Are its Symptoms and How Is It Cared For?

November 29, 2009 by Tom Nicholson · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Physical Therapy

Also known as “calcified tendinitis” or “calcifying tendinitis,” calcific tendinitis happens when calcium deposits cause tendons to become inflamed. Most often, rotator cuff tendons are the target, and can occur in either or both shoulders.

The actual cause of calcific Tendinitis is still unknown. Several things have been ruled out as causes. Excess calcium in the diet has been ruled out; people who develop it do not have elevated calcium levels in their blood. If you are diagnosed with this condition, do not limit your calcium; that can put you at a risk for osteoporosis as your body cannibalizes the bones to make up the lack.

There are some links between certain metabolic conditions, such as kidney disease, and calcific tendinitis, though whether the joint pain causes the kidney condition or vice versa is still being analyzed. While overuse of the shoulder joint can generate tendinitis, there is a difference between shoulder joint and rotator cuff wear and calcific tendinitis.

May be related to age

Some speculate that age, and the gradual ramping down of human growth hormone in the late 20s are one trigger for calcific Tendinitis, as it doesn’t happen to people under the age of 30, there may be Tendinitis from overuse injuries, but they usually don’t have calcium deposits.

Symptoms

Most cases of calcific tendinitis are asymptomatic, until the calcium deposits break up and cause inflammation. The most common symptom (before inflammation) is when you have difficulty raising your arm above your shoulder level, triggered by the calcium deposit rubbing inside the rotator cuff. This is sometimes called “shoulder impingement syndrome”.

One hazard of calcific Tendinitis is calcium crystals shedding off the deposit and cause inflammation elsewhere. This may be the first indication that a problem exists as those crystals migrate and cause pain elsewhere. These calcium deposits may be re-absorbed by the body at this time.

Sudden onset

The usual time frame for onset is sudden; you move your shoulder and it hurts as if small bits of broken glass are nestled under your shoulderblade. Most times, the pain subsides after a week as the calcium gets reabsorbed.

If you see your doctor during an attack of acute calcific tendinitis, it can be seen on an x-ray, via the deposits that exist in your shoulder rotator cuff. Usually, calcific tendinitis treatment simply consists of taking over-the-counter anti-inflammatory pain relievers and applying ice. Doing range of motion exercises during this time can also prevent experiencing “frozen shoulder” symptoms.

In the event of particularly severe pain, your doctor may give you a steroid or cortisone injection to relieve inflammation. For extreme cases, the deposits may be broken down with ultrasound or a hypodermic needle and extracted with a syringe. It’s rare, but on some occasions, arthroscopic surgery may be necessary.

A natural cure for back pain using chiropractic sounds impossible. However, chiropractors have all the tools they need to help an individual with back pain. Newburg Chiropractic is no different. They can help an individual with back pains by providing different types of therapies.

A chiropractor does not use pharmaceuticals to relieve back pain. Chiropractors do not use surgery to help the back pain. They use spinal adjustments, manual techniques, and therapy instruments. The use of these methods will ensure the spine movement will increase and the pain will decrease.

The patient may encounter unusual types of back pain. There pain can be weak or the pain can be strong. Regardless of how much pain they are in, the patient’s spin is stiff. Therefore, there is not much movement.

Finally when the pain is unbearable they will seek out a chiropractor to help them resolve the problem. The chiropractor will do an assessment of the patient. The results of the exam will let the chiropractor decide on a therapy to use. If the therapy is followed the patient will attain the best outcome.

The patient may see the chiropractor on multiply occasions. The outcome of these sessions will determine how long the patient is under care. If the chiropractor feels that the therapy being used is not working he may switch to a new therapy. Sometime the chiropractor needs to switch therapies several times. A chiropractor may even want to see the patient many times in one week.

Looking For And Preventing Torn Rotator Cuff Symptoms and Pain

November 28, 2009 by Tom Nicholson · Leave a Comment
Filed under: Physical Therapy

While torn rotator cuff symptoms are more commonly experienced by people who are middle aged, this is an injury which can affect anyone at any age. A torn rotator cuff can be due to an accident or more commonly, from repetitive stress injury. In the case of torn rotator cuffs stemming from an accident, the problem is immediately apparent. However, many with rotator cuff injuries due to repetitive strain don’t notice the problem for some time since the damage and symptoms worsen gradually over a period of time.

The first sign of an injured rotator cuff is usually throbbing pains which happen periodically and are not usually very severe. Many simply take a pain reliever and ignore the problem – which is a serious mistake, since they tend to continue putting stress on the injured joint, exacerbating the problem. All the pain reliever does is to numb the pain for a short time, with the symptoms returning worse than before once it wears off. The other early signs of an injured rotator cuff are stiffness, swelling and weakness. These symptoms show up slowly and worsen over time, which allows the suffer to prevent the worst possible outcome if they take action, since these symptoms will be experienced before the tear actually occurs.

Adhesive capsulitis (or “frozen shoulder”) can develop when the initial set of torn rotator cuff symptoms are experienced. This is a reduction of mobility in the joint which can be severe enough that the sufferer has great difficulty performing even the most common of movements, such as those involved in getting dressed.

Most people start taking heed of the torn rotator cuff symptoms when they start becoming unbearable. These symptoms build up over time and are a result of the inflammation of the rotator cuff. Once these symptoms manifest themselves completely, then it can take years to heal the problem. Therefore, it’s better to nip this problem in the bud by paying attention to the early symptoms and then enrolling yourself in a rotator cuff exercise program. The pain killers do not heal the cause of the problem; they just take care of the symptoms which worsen when the effects wear off.

If you engage in sports or other athletic pursuits or have a career which involves a lot of physical strain, you need to be especially careful about watching for the onset of torn rotator cuff symptoms. As the injury becomes worse, so do the symptoms – and conditions like frozen shoulder can be truly debilitating.

You’ll be able to prevent serious injury and keep torn rotator cuff symptoms from impairing your ability to live your life normally by having the problem diagnosed and treated as early as possible. A torn rotator cuff can be diagnosed using ultrasound, MRI, x-rays, physical examination and arthograms. The treatment may be as simple as ice packs or heat therapy with stretching and other exercises; or in more advanced injuries, physical therapy or even steroids may be indicated.

A hurting back does not always imply that the back is the actual cause of the pain.

We use our hands-on methods to fix the parts of the brain that are misfiring or not working correctly, and, in turn, typically are able to eliminate back pain and other disorders the naturally. We fix what is wrong the way Nature intended instead of relying on medicine or surgery to do the healing.
