Today’s Fashion Can Be Tomorrow’s Pain
Looking your best might not always be the best thing for you. Today’s society is extremely fashion and style conscious. And unfortunately, clothing designers and stylists aim to please by creating unique looks that might not always be practical or even comfortable.
The look of the season shows runway models in high platform heels and tight skirts or pants. Models have perfected the runway “walk,” but the popular looks and accessories are frequently impractical and can create leg, back, and spine or neck problems. “Sometimes I see a woman walking down the street with high heels and a two-ton bag, and I want to stop her and make her aware of what she is doing to her body,” said ACA national spokesperson, Dr. Jerome McAndrews.
Women generally wear high heels to complement an outfit, not for comfort, but some might not realize that these shoes can cause serious discomfort in the feet and can also exacerbate back pain. High heels alter the balanced position of a person’s body. When a woman wears high heels, a new dynamic equilibrium occurs. Dr. McAndrews compared the musculoskeletal system to a mobile, hanging in dynamic equilibrium, each part balancing the other. If one part becomes ‘fixed,’ the whole system will compensate with a movement or restriction. Essentially, wearing high heels for any length of time increases the normal forward curve of the back and causes the pelvis to tip forward. This alters the normal configuration of the pelvis and spine necessary for the body to maintain a center of gravity.
“The legs are the foundation of the musculoskeletal system, and a person standing flat-footed or bare-footed would be completely balanced,” said Dr. McAndrews. “While standing, the hamstrings are taut and both parts of the pelvis are stabilized so that the support is normal. By bringing the heel up, you encourage the shortness of the hamstring muscles.”
Women and men alike fall into the fashion trap. However, women, more than men, tend to wear clothes that are too tight. Stylish tight tube skirts and tight pants can be attractive, but are often too restrictive. Clothes that are too tight throw a person off-balance, and simple everyday tasks such as bending, sitting and walking become difficult. “Tight clothes restrict a person from moving comfortably, resulting in poor posture and misalignment of the spine,” said Dr. McAndrews.
Another unhealthy fashion statement is the use of heavy purses, backpacks and handbags. Women and men tend to carry too many items in one bag, or briefcase, and are often not aware of the potential health risks associated with toting an excessive amount of “stuff.” When you carry a bag with detectable weight-more than 10 percent of your body weight it can cause improper balance. When hiked over one shoulder, it interferes with the natural movement of the upper and lower body. “The person carrying the bag will hike one shoulder to subconsciously guard against the weight, holding the other shoulder immobile,” said Dr. McAndrews. “This results in the unnatural counterbalance movement of one shoulder and little control over the movements of the arms and legs. Even worse, the spine curves toward the shoulder.”
More and more people carry their credit cards, ATM cards and personal identification in the back pocket of their pants. This might be a convenient way of carrying the necessary items with you each day, but carrying your wallet in the back pocket of your pants can cause discomfort. Dr. McAndrews suggested men and women remove their wallets or other items before sitting for long periods of time. “Sitting on your wallet or card holder for the entire day will create a pocket in the muscle lying underneath the wallet, and whether your pants are tight or loose-fitting, this can result in discomfort or pain.”
In today’s society, it might be important to you to look fashionable, but it is more important to choose clothes, shoes and bags that are comfortable and that suit your style. By following and remembering these simple steps, it is possible to look and feel your best.
Choose comfortable shoes. If you must wear high heels, bring a pair of flat shoes along with you to change into should you become uncomfortable. If you walk to work, wear flat shoes and change into your more fashionable shoes when you arrive to alleviate any pain or discomfort. If the shoe is uncomfortable while standing, chances are it will not be any more comfortable while walking. The wrong shoe can affect the body’s center of gravity. Choose supportive shoes. Designer spikes or non-supportive loafers may look nice but do not allow for easy, symmetrical walking. While sitting, whether or not you are wearing heels, it is important to take frequent stretch breaks to alleviate atrophy of the hamstring muscles. Try to avoid excessive wear of tight pants or clothing. If you prefer tighter clothes, choose styles that allow you to perform daily tasks with ease. Select a briefcase or purse with a wide adjustable strap. Ideally, the strap should be long enough to place over the head. This evenly distributes the bulk of the weight across the body. When carrying a bag, or briefcase, switch sides frequently to avoid placing the burden of the weight on one side of your body. Take the time to empty unnecessary items from your bag. Place all necessary items-such as wallets and cellular phones-in the front pockets of the bag. Stretching around to reach for your wallet can result in a pulled neck or back. If you are driving or sitting for long periods of time, remove your wallet or card holder from the back pocket of your pants. Think about your daily tasks. If your clothes affect your movements, consider outfits that fit your lifestyle. Designers and stylists tend to be more concerned about the way something looks rather than the way it feels. Listen to your body. One of the most important aspects of being in style and looking your best is to maintain healthy judgement. By following simple suggestions, being fashionable can be comfortable.

An Overview of Treating Carpal Tunnel With Wrist Braces
Carpal tunnel syndrome can be a tricky and debilitating disease, most especially because it’s so painful. It involves the median nerve in your wrist, which inflamed muscles or tendons can impact. This in turn can cause discomfort ranging from mild tingling or numbness to shooting pains that go all the way up into your arm. Because it involves the median nerve, this can be particularly painful. To avoid this happening, combat the symptoms at the first sign, and do exercises to avoid carpal tunnel syndrome, if they have not yet appeared.
Treatments for carpal tunnel syndrome have become more sophisticated in recent years, and today’s carpal tunnel syndrome sufferers have a number of tools at their disposal that can help them ease the pain they experience from carpal tunnel syndrome. Anti-inflammatory medications, including those available over the counter, can keep inflammation and swelling down, which may relieve pressure on the median nerve in the wrist. You can also use wrist braces during the day, at night, or all the times so that you can stabilize your wrist and keep from injuring it further by flexing at or overextending it. Participating in regular muscle and stretching exercises can also help build back muscle strength, and can keep tendons limber as you go through healing. You can use these methods in combination or individually, and thus find the relief you seek as you do with carpal tunnel syndrome symptoms.
If you’re looking for a wrist brace(s) for your couple tunnel syndrome, you have several options to choose from. Your doctor may give you a prescription for a brace (or two, if both wrists are affected) if it can be covered by your insurance. If you don’t have insurance or your insurance will not cover the cost of a wrist brace, you can look for braces that will help you with symptoms at local pharmacies and medical equipment stores.
Medical equipment stores, local pharmacies and your doctor’s office may be able to help you acquire a wrist brace so that you can find something suitable for you. If you’ve never purchased a wrist brace before, make sure you get help from a medical staff member or your doctor so that you get the right fit and size, and therefore encourage healing to the greatest degree.
When shopping for wrist braces for carpal tunnel you have many options. You may require a prescription from your doctor in order to have a wrist brace that will be covered by your private insurance company. Those who do not have private health insurance may want to find a cheaper alternative and can find many different wrist braces that will help with their symptoms without spending a great deal of money. Local pharmacies, medical equipment stores or even your doctor’s office may have a variety of different wrist braces that you can try on to find the one that suits your needs best. If this is your first wrist brace purchase, you will want to make sure that you seek out help from a staff member to find the best fit possible for your wrist to maximize the benefits for your healing.
In either case, though, your research can be done in the comfort of your own home without having to go out and do a lot of searching in different stores to find the type of wrist brace that’s best for you. No matter where you ultimately get your wrist brace, remember that in order to alleviate symptoms and perhaps the carpal tunnel syndrome altogether, you should be doing daily stretching and strengthening exercises to keep carpal tunnel symptoms at bay. Done right, you may be able to regain a lot of lost function and even alleviate symptoms altogether.

Diabetes and Obesity
Like Scylla and Charybdis, the twin sea monsters of Greek mythology, diabetes and obesity are the twin medical monsters confronting America’s children. Diabetes and obesity have even been featured as the story line in a recent episode of Law & Order, a show well-known for focusing on issues that matter.
What’s going on? Diabetes and obesity are twin raging epidemics endangering the health and welfare of our nation’s children. In New York City, by the age of 4, there is a one in three chance that the child will be obese. More than 40% of children are at an unhealthy weight at ages 2 and 3.1 National statistics are similar.
Type II diabetes, long known as “adult-onset diabetes”, is now being recognized as a significant juvenile disorder. Up to 45% of the children diagnosed with diabetes have the type II form.2 And the numbers keep increasing.
Type II diabetes and obesity are closely related. And being overweight is one of the two major risk factors for developing type II diabetes. The other major risk factor, not surprisingly, is lack of exercise – not being physically active.
Why be concerned? Both diabetes and obesity contribute to additional severe health issues. Obesity is the leading cause of pediatric high blood pressure and increases the risk of coronary heart disease. Uncontrolled diabetes, over time, can lead to heart disease, kidney disease, neurologic disorders, and blindness.
So we are very concerned for our children’s well-being. The good news is both conditions are lifestyle-related. Bad diet and lack of exercise cause both conditions. This is well-known. It is also well-known that maintaining a healthy diet and getting regular exercise prevents obesity and prevents or delays type II diabetes.3,4
As parents, it’s up to us to set the standards. If we’re eating healthy, balanced meals, our kids will do the same. If we exercise regularly and keep ourselves fit and trim, our kids will exercise regularly, too.

Can’t Sleep Because Of Your Back Pain?
I have treated many patients who had suffered with insomnia because of their back pain. Have you been up most of night with back pain? Are you desperate for a good night’s sleep? Many patients I treat for back pain had not been able to sleep in the same bad with their spouse for years. Even though they had bought different mattresses, and some were very expensive. They said it would have been worth the money just to get to some sleep.
People who suffer with back pain tend to buy different beds – some very expensive beds. Some patients have tried putting boards under their mattresses, or they sleep on the floor. Many have slept on their couches or were sleeping propped up in their recliners. They try buying different pillows: soft or contour pillows for their necks and firm body-pillows for between their knees. It is sad because they will tell me they have not slept with their spouses in years, because they hurt too much to stay in the bed. These back pain sufferers report they have the “Goldilocks” syndrome, and they actually have tried sleeping in every bed in their house. Nothing helped them for any length of time.
Some back pain may resolve in a short time, and there can be temporary reasons for the pain. However, it can be a more serious problem, if the symptoms persist. Back pain and interrupted sleep can become a cycle, even though back sufferers try so hard to get some sleep. Many of my patients told me they had slept in every bed in the house, just like Goldilocks. Because they cannot sleep, they keep their spouses awake by tossing, turning and having the television on, or playing soothing music. While they are surfing late-night television, it is common that they watch infomercials and buy things such as inversion tables, aids for sleeping, diet, or exercise programs; all for the hope of pain relief and sleep.
There are temporary reasons for back pain. An example is a pregnant woman. Her back pain can be because of so much extra weight around her mid- section during the day. The same thing can happen from being overweight. Other reasons could be improper carrying to one side, anything from a heavy purse to a child riding on the hip, improper sitting, sitting while leaning and peering at a computer screen. The list goes on, because of our more sedentary lives.
If the pills do not help you, on the next visit when you see your doctor, he or she will probably tell you to go to a physical therapist. If you are still in pain, when you go back to your doctor again, then you may get to have X-rays or MRIs to figure the actual diagnosis and exactly what is wrong. If you are diagnosed with a herniated disc or degenerative disc disease, you may be referred to an orthopedic specialist or a neurologist. At that point, they could recommend having an injection (epidural) which may help short-term: two months, two weeks, two days, or not at all.
First visit, you could get pain pills and muscle relaxants, and you will have a “nonspecific” back pain diagnosis. If the pills do not help, on the second visit, you may be sent to physical therapy. If that does not help, on your third visit, the doctor may order X-rays or MRIs and direct you to a specialist (an orthopedic or neurologist). If you have a problem such a herniated disc, degenerative disc, spinal stenosis or facet syndrome, the doctor will probably have you get an epidural. This is a temporary pain blocker and may last a while or only a few days, if at all.
If there is post-surgery pain, they may have to go under the care of a pain specialist. Some surgeries are successful and the symptoms are gone, others might last for two to five years or less, and some are not successful – failed surgery syndrome – at all.

Low Back Pain Treatment Via Lower Back Pain Exercise
There are several back pain treatments available to someone suffering from back pain. One of these is lower back exercise. However, among the diverse exercises for back pain offered, two of which are demonstrated to be especially effective to reduce pain. This editorial illustrates these workouts step by step so that the back sufferer can learn and work them out to heal their backbone.
Lower back pain exercise is one of the successful techniques for herniated disc treatment. In reality, exercises for back pain can be done as part of .
When a back attack occurs, the person will feel powerless mobility. It is crucial to relax on bed for one to two days depending on how serious the back difficulty is. NO exercises for lower back pain is advised. The reason of this rest is to decrease the inflammation of the back. During this phase, Acupressure techniques can be used to reduce the inflammation as well as the agony. I actually covered the acupressure methods for lumbago in a thesis. It can provide you almost instant relief for back pain.
Yet, once you have overcome this duration of severe attack, you should initiate to focus on to strengthen your back muscle that surround the backbone. These backbone muscles are to be stretched so that they can maintain your back. This can be carried out through suitable lower back pain exercise.
I would like to reveal with you two easy lower back pain exercises that are useful yet easy for low back pain treatment, herniated disc treatment, bulging disc treatment or even pinched nerve back (or sciatica ).
Lower Back Stretch
Steps are as follows
1. Lay face down and relax your lower back
2. Place you arm beside the body. Twist head to one side and take a two or three deep breaths.
3. After that, position elbow under the shoulders. You can lean on your forearms with your back bent and head up. Support for about 15 seconds.
4. The final step is to straighten up your arm and lock your elbow and lift the upper part (ie above waist) of your body. Hold in the raised posture for 15 secs and bring down the body
5. Go over this for fifteen times.
Lower Back Side Stretch
Steps are as follows
1. Lie down in a supine (face up, backside on the flooring) position, lap turned to approximately ninty degrees with feet on the flooring
2. By revolving your waist, twist your legs concurrently to your left pending your left knee is almost touching the ground, support in pose for 5 secs before rotating back to initial resting posture.
3. Go over the action for the other side.
4. Do 5 times for both sides.
While there are further lower back pain exercise that are also beneficial, the above Low Back Pain Exercises are the compulsory ones a sore back sufferer cannot do without. Meanwhile, there is an additional part that you would require to be knowledgeable of. This is adopting the proper position and have good way of life. These would comprise the way you sit, stand up, nap, running on a computer and even driving. With knowledge of good postures and habits, one could put a stop to farther episodes of herniated disc recurrence.

Carpal Tunnel Can Be Erase Through The Use of Wrist Braces
Carpal tunnel syndrome is a condition where the median nerve in the wrist is under pressure due to swelling and can cause discomfort, numbness or even shooting pain in the wrist and lower forearm. There are many people in the workforce that suffer from this very common condition and are under a physician’s care in order to take care of the symptoms and help ward off any further damage to their wrists and hands. If you are one of these people, or think that you may have symptoms of carpal tunnel, there are many tools that you can use in order to help your condition.
The first step is determining if it is indeed carpal tunnel that you suffer from. You will need to seek out the advice of a family physician or local practitioner for a complete diagnosis. They may ask you questions about your daily activities as well as examine your hands for any pain or swelling. In some extreme cases an electromyography (EMG) test can be required to observe the nerves and muscles in your hands and wrists and compare them to known cases of carpal tunnel syndrome. If you are not satisfied with your doctor’s conclusions, you are free to seek out a second opinion. No one knows your body better than you do, so if you feel you are misdiagnosed, be sure to have another doctor check you out before adhering to a treatment plan.
It is easy to take care of carpal tunnel, however if you move it to the back burner it will become worse and worse, putting even more pressure on that median nerve. The feeling in your hands will become nonexistent, and in the worse case you’ll experience pain shooting up and down your arms and into your hands. This pain is severe and will actually interfere with your day to day activities. It is not something to mess around with, and if you fail to treat the underlying problem it will only get worse.
Carpal tunnel syndrome can sometimes be caused by another medical condition entirely. Diabetes, thyroid disease, lupus or many others can cause swelling of the tendons and put pressure on your median nerve in your wrist. This can give you carpal tunnel symptoms and should be treated accordingly. Rather than splinting your wrist, you should have treatment plans in place for the underlying condition that is causing the carpal tunnel rather than just treating the wrist itself. Band-aid solutions for the symptoms of carpal tunnel will only temporarily relieve the symptoms and will return if the main medical condition is left untreated to cause problems later.
What you need to do is a couple of stretches every single day, and talk to your physician or chiropractor to find out exactly what you need to do. They’ll be able to tell you all of the exercises that you need to do in order to stay in optimal health. They’ll also prescribe anti-inflammatory drugs that will help to alleviate the symptoms. This is a very serious condition, and you need to take care of it as quickly as possible or you will end up regretting it. Searing pain shooting up and down your arm is not normal and you cannot live with it, so it’s best that you don’t even try. Use the steps that have been mentioned in this article and employ them in your life.
Anyone who has ever felt the tingling numbness in their fingers and hands knows how uncomfortable carpal tunnel syndrome can be. For people all over the world, relief has been found in the simple exercises outlined by Tom Nicholson. Wouldn’t you like to avoid invasive surgery and ease your pain through a series of simple carpal tunnel exercises? Click on that link to get a glimpse of Tom’s unusual set of exercises.

Whether it be through ulcers, sore knees, low back pain, tight neck muscles, or a host of other diseases or maladies, our bodies let us know when there is something wrong. Are Massages Appropriate for Every Age Group
A massage can be a great stress buster. In this day and age when just about everyone, including children are stressed, can anyone get a massage? While age is not a deterrent to having a massage, not all types of massages are appropriate for all age groups. It is for this reason why there are masseuses who are trained in offering various types of massages.
While massages are appropriate for any person aged 0 to 100, there are massages and techniques that are best suited for different age groups. Plus, the techniques used and pressure asserted when giving a healthy adult male a massage wouldn’t be used on a child of eight. An aromatherapy massage may not be ideal for an asthmatic as the strong scents may bring on an attack, but again this is not age-related.
It may be surprising to learn that babies can benefit greatly from massages. In fact, from the first day of birth a massage can be given to a baby. Not everyone can give a baby a massage as there are techniques that must be learned so as not to harm them. Many parents take classes on giving massages to babies because of the many benefits that can be derived from this. Some of the wonderful benefits include:
- For many newborns, a massage makes the transition from the womb into the world a bit easier. – Helps to soothe a fussy baby – Can help put a baby to sleep – Helps improve and maintain the health of the baby’s circulatory system and even their digestive system – Helps to build and strengthen the bond between parents and babies
In fact, there are only a few groups of persons who are advised not to have massages. Others can have massages if they have certain conditions, but the affected areas of the body must be avoided. None of these factors, however, has anything to do with age. These individuals are:
- Pregnant women in their first trimester. In fact, unless the masseuse has been trained in giving massages to pregnant women, known as prenatal massage, you shouldn’t get a massage when pregnant. – Persons with varicose veins should avoid having the areas with the veins massaged – Persons with broken bones. Clearly the tissue surrounding broken bones should not be massaged. Even the areas just outside the cast may be sensitive to pressure. – People with areas with open cuts and wounds.
Anyone can have a stress busting, relaxing massage regardless of their age. The one factor is that the massage should be age-appropriate and performed by someone trained to offer this type of massage as certain massages are appropriate for people of varying ages.
Before deciding on what type of massage to get or give someone, learn about the various types of massages that exist. There are quite a few, with the 10 most commonly known ones being Swedish massage, Acupressure massage, Deep Tissue massage, Aromatherapy massage, Pregnancy massage, Hot Stone massage, Back massage, Shiatsu massage, Thai massage, and Geriatric massage.
Over the years, massage therapy has become a popular choice for people of all ages. They provide the soothing comfort and relaxation that we all could use at some point in our lives.

Chiropractic and Arthritis
We have all seen the TV ads ” nice-looking woman in her fifties, sitting on a nice sofa in a nice living room, rubbing her hands, in obvious pain. Of course, she’s not Lady Macbeth, trying to rub off the imagined blood of her murdered husband. She’s a woman with arthritis.
According to the Center for Disease Control, arthritis is the leading cause of disability in the United States.1 Approximately 47 million people have doctor-diagnosed arthritis and 17 million have arthritis which is attributable to activity limitations.
Osteoarthritis, the most common form, is a degenerative condition affecting the joints and the soft tissues around the joints and the associated cartilage, ligaments, and tendons. The most commonly affected areas are the spine, the hands, and the shoulders, hips, and knees. The pain of arthritis, the reduced mobility, and the lifestyle accommodations needed for pain avoidance are discouraging and may even lead to depression.
Many anti-inflammatory drugs are available for the treatment of arthritis. In recent years many of these have been found to cause severe side effects. Vioxx is the most notorious of these ” cardiovascular complications caused a worldwide recall of the drug. Celebrex, another well-known arthritis medication, was also found to increase the risk of heart attack and stroke at high doses.
The very good news is there are several wellness-based treatment alternatives to long-term medication. These include exercise, diet, and in many cases, chiropractic treatment.
Exercise is critical in restoring mobility and, over time, in reducing pain.2,3 Persons with osteoarthritis often experience a vicious cycle of deteriorating symptoms. Pain causes reduced mobility (pain avoidance), which (paradoxically) actually causes more pain, which causes further reductions of mobility . . . . Activities of daily living ” getting out of a chair, opening a jar, bending and lifting can become a real challenge as the person struggles to avoid further pain.
So, restoring mobility is key. Exercise done very gently at first ” is the answer. Range-of-motion activities to get the joints moving again are very beneficial, including Arm circles Wrist circles Shoulder shrugs Side-to-side bending for the lower back Gentle knee bends Ankle circles Flexing and pointing the feet
Walking is a perfect exercise for treatment of arthritis. Begin by walking one block, then two, then around the block. Walk five minutes daily for a week, then increase by a minute or two each day. Get up to 15 minutes of gentle walking, and then begin to gradually increase your pace. The increased mobility will not only reduce pain, but also provide a cardiovascular benefit and improve one’s ability to perform activities of daily living.
Chiropractic treatment, in combination with an exercise program, may assist in restoring joint mobility and reducing pain.
